The Barn Theatre

Martin County's Oldest Community Theatre

Play:  A Bad Year for Tomatoes by John Patrick

Type:  Comedy

Cast of Characters:  3 men, 4 women

Myra (Myrtle) (Sadie):  Older sitcom actress (began acting career as a child).  This is a very challenging leading role (On Stage all except for 3 pages of the 60 page script!) This role has the opportunity to play a 'straight man' for the comedy, and also to play the absurd Crazy Sister (Sadie) that Myra invents to frighten away her nosy neighbors.  Need ability to do quick changes and some physical comedy.

Piney:  Tall, bearded, laconic and 'boring' character...at least according to the nosy neighbors.  Piney has limited skills with regard to reading and communication, but is happy to find a new 'mark' for his offerings of firewood, nuts, and manure.  Hilarity ensues when he falls for the Crazy Sister Myra invents to frighten away the neighbors.

Tom:  Myra's agent, and apparent part-time love interest.  There is more to this relationship than meets the eye.

Reba:  One of the Nosy Neighbors.  I would like to find someone who is athletic and daring for this role.  Reba is a Bible quoting, church lady!

Cora:  One of the Nosy Neighbors.  Gossip, closet drinker, best friends with Reba

Willa Mae:  One of the Nosy Neighbors.  Witch-like, into the occult.

Sheriff:  The sheriff shows up in the last act.  This is an ideal role for someone who wants to make a big impact with a small role.  I would like to see someone able to channel Barney Fife.
